"Ang kabataan ay hindi lamang pag-asa ng bayan, ang kabataan dapat aasahan na ng bayan."
This is the message that Sen. Francis "Chiz" Escudero conveyed to the youth during the ANC Leadership Forum held at the Ateneo de Manila University last May 11.
Organized by the ABS-CBN News Channel in partnership with the Ateneo School of Government, the forum seeks to serve as an avenue for the Filipino people to examine their leaders and help the voters decide on their choice come 2010 elections.
First among the participants to be interviewed, Escudero candidly answered questions posed by one of the program's anchors, Tina Monson-Palma, which revolved around his strength and weakness as a leader, as well as his achievements during his stint as the representative of Sorsogon's 1st district.
Escudero - who is turning 40 this October - was quick to reply that his strength is his youth. And while his critics have tried to relate his "being a member of the younger generation" to inexperience, the senator said the youth is fast becoming a moving force in governance.
"Our voters now are young and most of our voters who are young would want to be heard and would want to take part in governance," Escudero said, adding that the youth of today have become more assertive and want their voices heard in government.
