ON THE CONFERMENT OF HONORARY DEGREE TO PRESIDENT DUTERTE

For the record, I did not move nor did I object to continuing UP’s tradition of offering honorary degrees to those invited to be the University’s commencement speaker, such as the President, Chief Justice, or the Senate President.

As with all honorary degrees, these cannot be conferred unilaterally, and can only be considered conferred if the intended recipient accepts the said honor.

The controversy surrounding this issue is not surprising, given that the honorary degrees offered by the University have never been unanimous – and given that UP alumni have always upheld the school’s tradition of questioning tradition.
